Manchester United reached the Europa League semi-finals in astonishing fashion, hitting back from the brink of elimination and humiliation to see off Lyon at a bouncing Old Trafford.
While United can look forward to a showdown against Athletic Bilbao, Tottenham will take on Bodo/Glimt in the other semi after Spurs edged out Eintracht Frankfurt thanks to Dominic Solanke’s penalty.
Chelsea made it a hat-trick of European success stories despite losing to Legia Warsaw in the Europa League on a day where Virgil van Dijk’s future beyond the end of the season was resolved at Liverpool.
Maguire helps United squeeze past Lyon in nine-goal thriller
Harry Maguire capped another unforgettable European comeback for Manchester United, who claimed an unlikely 5-4 win over French side Lyon for a 7-6 aggregate triumph.
Corentin Tolisso and Nicolas Tagliafico cancelled out Manuel Ugarte and Diogo Dalot goals to take the match to extra-time, with United staring down the barrel of a humiliating quarter-final exit.
Lyon made light work of Tolisso’s sending off as Rayan Cherki saw his strike followed by Alexandre Lacazette’s penalty as the hosts faced the prospect of a first season without European football since 2014-15.
But Bruno Fernandes’ 114th minute spot-kick brought hope, substitute Kobbie Mainoo’s 120th-minute goal sparked bedlam and moments later Maguire’s header sent the home faithful into dreamland.
Solanke the hero for Spurs
Ange Postecoglou declared he would be around “for a little bit longer” after Tottenham clinched a Europa League semi-final spot with a superb 1-0 win at Eintracht Frankfurt.
Spurs were back in the last-chance saloon and up against it at Deutsche Bank Park after a 1-1 draw in the first leg last Thursday, but produced one of their best displays under the Australian.
Dominic Solanke’s spot-kick two minutes before half-time settled the tie and was won after vice-captains Cristian Romero and James Maddison combined.
“Unfortunately for a lot of you, you’re going to have to put up with me for a little bit longer, so let’s see how that goes,” Postecoglou said.
Chelsea win but leave supporters feeling blue
Chelsea progressed to the last four of the Conference League but Legia Warsaw won 2-1 at Stamford Bridge in their quarter-final second leg to deepen supporters’ frustrations with Enzo Maresca.
The Italian’s side will be favourites to reach the final in Wroclaw on May 28 but there was little here to strike fear into any opponent as the hosts were made to rely on their victory a week ago in Poland to go through 4-2 on aggregate.
A penalty by Czech forward Tomas Pekhart gave Legia the lead before Marc Cucurella levelled, but Chelsea were soon undone again when Steve Kapuadi scored early in the second half, as the Shed End glowed ominous red in the light of flares lit by the uproarious away fans.
The manner in which Chelsea were defeated at home by the team currently fifth in the Polish Ekstraklasa does not bode well for their bid to qualify for the Champions League and could have serious repercussions for the confidence fans place in Maresca, which has been sorely tested in recent months.
Liverpool tie down Van Dijk
Virgil van Dijk insisted committing to Liverpool was “always the plan” after the Reds captain put pen to paper on a new two-year deal with the club.
The Netherlands defender followed last week’s example of Mohamed Salah in finalising an extension just a couple of months before his current deal expires.
Although both were always keen to remain at Anfield, the issue had been allowed to rumble on all season, but, with the Premier League title now within touching distance, the loose ends have been tied up.
“I’m very happy, very proud,” Van Dijk told Liverpool’s official website. “It was always Liverpool. That was the case. It was always in my head, it was always the plan and it was always Liverpool. There wasn’t any doubt in my head that this is the place to be for me and my family.”
What’s on today?
A full Sky Bet Championship awaits on Good Friday, when top-two sides Leeds and Burnley will look to at least maintain a five-point cushion over third-placed Sheffield United as the season edges nearer to a close.
Several Premier League managers are set to speak at press conferences ahead of the weekend’s action.
Arne Slot is first up on Friday morning, with Mikel Arteta and Pep Guardiola among those on a packed afternoon schedule.
