Outline plans for former Shrewsbury shopping centre approved

Smithfield Riverside regeneration project in Shrewsbury

Plans to build on the site of a former shopping centre have been given outline approval.

Shropshire Council said the Smithfield Riverside regeneration project in Shrewsbury would likely be used for a mix of homes, offices and a hotel.

Last year it also received outline planning approval to create a public park on part of the land.

The Riverside centre, which closed last August, was one of three shopping centres bought by the authority for £51m in 2018.

The former Riverside shopping centre and medical practice have now been demolished and construction of ‘Riverside Gardens’ on Roushill is expected to begin later this year.

The second phase of the regeneration project involves the development of three plots located between Smithfield Road, Raven Meadows and the new park.

The council said further detailed planning applications would be coming forward for each development in the future.
