Banking hubs call after Shropshire branches close

Stuart Anderson MP

Banking hubs are needed after the closure of two Lloyds branches, an MP has said.

The bank is to close its outlets in Bridgnorth and Ludlow in May and the MP for South Shropshire, Stuart Anderson, said: “To assume that everyone can use online banking is a very naive approach.”

Banking hubs are locations where people can access common banking services and Mr Anderson said he would ask people in the area what they think of the idea.

Lloyds Banking Group is to shut 136 branches by March, saying customers are increasingly using digital channels for their day-to-day banking.

“The digital age is here, but there are people that do not use a computer (and) do not have access to online banking,” Mr Anderson said.

The Conservative MP said he believes Lloyds should have retained its branches in the two towns.
